Model de l’artiste

2016

The work Artist’s Model consists of two photographic plates of academic nude poses of the artist.

The plates are based on the ‘Études du nu’ academic nudes photos created in the 1800 by photographers such as Igout, to replace the life model as a cheap alternative. These plates were also smuggled to the general population as pornography to get around the obscenity laws. One plate is based on the female nude of the time and genre, the other on the male nude of the time and genre.

By placing myself as the model in these plates, I have eluded to the heavy emphasis on self-portraiture in my own work as well as in art history. But notably, being placed in that context makes my body a standard to be emulated, as well as an object of desire. The work speaks of the gaze, wether from other of the oneself, ideas of narcism, and my position as a white male in the kingdom of ideals and standard.
